8Q sam is Singapore Art Museum’s new wing for contemporary art. It is so-named because it is sited on number 8, Queen Street. Located just 50 metres away from the main museum building, both sites were originally constructed to serve as schools. With SAM inaugurated in 1996, and 8Q sam now in 2008, the museum’s institutional history is much more recent, compared to the heritage of the school buildings which goes back to the 19th century. We can think of many close associations between the museum and the school as institutional typologies.
The inaugural exhibition of 8Q sam, 8Q-rate: School takes this association as its point of departure, as we invite the audience to participate in thinking through areas of confluence and divergence, between formal education and contemporary art. Education and art are both about learning. Where they differ is the structure of learning. Grades, classroom, syllabus, organised teaching and instruction are features characteristic of school. Contemporary art, on the other hand, tends to be regarded as a zone of free and individualistic expression. It can also have a strong community base, as contemporary art draws its themes, issues and images from contemporary culture. Utilising multi-sensory media and engaging experience not unlike popular entertainment, contemporary art encourages new experiences that are differentiated from common patterns of consumption and stock reactions, so as to enhance criticality. Contemporary art can be more immediately accessible and understood by the younger generation who have grown up in an age of information technology and media saturation.
